If youve been denied financial aid from your school or you didnt get as much as you need, that decision isnt necessarily final.

A financial aid appeal letter doesnt guarantee that the college will change its mind, but it can allow you to plead your case and share some information they might not know about.

If youre hoping the financial aid office will revise their decision, its essential to know how to write a compelling appeal letter for financial aid. A few tips, like providing the appropriate documentation, writing a polite, concise letter, and adding a thank you could help in building a persuasive argument. Read on for more details and suggestions for writing a financial aid appeal letter.

Know When To Write A Financial Aid Appeal Letter

In general, schools will only review a financial aid appeal if there has been a substantial change in your circumstances since you submitted your school application and the Free Application for Federal Student Aid that would make you eligible for more need-based aid. For example:

  • You or your parents lost their jobs
  • A parent or spouse passed away
  • You or a family member had major medical expenses

Given the economic impact the coronavirus pandemic has caused, many people may qualify for additional reviews. The 2020-2021 FAFSA required applicants to submit their 2018 tax returns. But in 2020, tens of millions of people have filed for unemployment, so many families may have seen their financial situations significantly change since they filed their 2018 tax returns.

When it comes to appealing financial aid decisions, timing is everything. Financial aid is often limited, so submit your appeal as soon as possible. Universities may only have a small amount of institutional aid available, such as grants or scholarships. Once that money is distributed, they cant issue more, so your only option may be to take out additional student loans.

Options For A Graceful Exit

The aforementioned options can be helpful solutions if you have the budget and want to stay in your home. The first step you should consider is putting your home up for sale at full price.

If this isnt an option because you still wont have the equity to pay off the loan, consider the following choices. They wont hurt as much as a foreclosure from a credit perspective.

Be Specific About Your Plan For Success

Emma also presents a plan for her future success. The committee will be pleased to hear that she is communicating with her advisor. In fact, Emma would be wise to have her advisor write a letter of support to go with her appeal.

A few elements of Emma’s future plan could use a little more detail. She says that she “will focus much better on schoolwork” and “manage time more wisely.” The committee is likely to want to hear more on these points. If another family crisis arises, what will Emma do to ensure that she is able to stay focused on schoolwork? What is her time management plan? She won’t become a better time manager simply be saying she will do so.

In this part of the letter, Emma should be more specific. How exactly is she going to learn and develop more effective time management strategies? Are there services at her school to help with her time management strategies? If so, Emma should mention those services and describe how she will utilize them.

On the whole, Emma comes across as a student who deserves a second chance. Her letter is polite and respectful, and she is honest with the committee about what went wrong. A severe appeals committee may reject the appeal because of the mistakes Emma made, but many colleges would be willing to give her a second chance. Indeed, situations like Emma’s are the very reason that colleges allow students to appeal a dismissal. The context of the low grades matters.

The Financial Aid Offer Fell Short

A students financial aid offer is based on the schools certified cost of attendance and the students expected family contribution, which is calculated based on the information provided in the Free Application for Federal Student Aid form.

If you are a dependent student your parents expected financial contribution will be factored into your federal student aid award. But just because your parents may have the income and assets to help you pay for school on paper, that doesnt always mean they will be able to.

Even if they had originally planned to help out, lifes unexpected twists and turns may have caused something to change since you first submitted your FAFSA form. For example, maybe a parent lost their job or switched to a job with a lower-paying salary, or a medical emergency ate up the cash they had set aside to help you cover the cost of your education.

If you need more aid than the offer provides and you have a good reason to think so, a financial aid appeal letter may be your ticket to helping you get what you need.

Alternatives For Paying For College

Learning how to write a strong appeal for financial aid could potentially improve your chances of getting the help you need. But, if you submit your letter and your appeal is still denied, you may still have other options for covering your college costs.

For example, you may be able to qualify for scholarships through your school or a private organization. Check your schools website for opportunities, as well as websites like, Fastweb, and College Board.

If your parents are willing to help, they can apply for Parent PLUS Loans through the US Department of Education. These loans are not needs-based, and the maximum amount they can borrow is your schools cost of attendance minus any financial aid youve already received.

Finally, you may also be able to apply for a private student loan. These loans require a credit check, though, so if youre still relatively new to credit, you may need a parent to co-sign the loan.

As you consider these options, take the time to research their costs and terms to make sure you get the best one for you, keeping in mind that exhausting all federal aid options first before applying for a private student loan is ideal.

If you do decide that a private student loan is the right fit for your educational needs, were happy to help. SoFi offers flexible payment options and terms, and dont worry, there are no hidden fees.

This is a kind gesture that I will hardly forget. However, I humbly appeal for more funding as my family and I have been victims of a harrowing earthquake.

As you must have heard from the news, Southern Italy has been plagued by a devastating earthquake that has devoured lives and properties. Thankfully, no life was lost in my family. However, the cost of this unforeseen tragedy has drastically reduced our savings for education. Our house has been repeatedly destroyed and the treatment of my elder brother who has sustained injuries is expensive.

I was first diagnosed with arthritis 5 years ago, in September 2014. I continued working as a restaurant manager at the restaurant where I had been working at for over 8 years and received initial treatments from my doctor. However, the pain and swelling increased to the point that I had to leave my job in August 2015. At that point, I found it difficult to dress myself and manipulate small objects, like socks, buttons or zippers. Because work is important to me, I took a job as a cashier at a local Shoppers Drug Mart, but by June 2016 the stiffness in my joints had spread to my knees and feet. I am unable to stand for long periods of time, bend down or lift heavy goods as a result.
